Stand where Japan began — at the shrine of Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor — then walk through Asuka, where Buddhism first reached Japan. Japan's founding emperor (Emperor Jimmu) shrine — the mythological starting point of Japan. Vast cypress-wood compound surrounded by a forest of 80,000 trees. Free entry. 1 min walk from Kashiharajingu-mae Station.
Japan's first Buddhist temple, founded 596 AD. Houses the bronze Asuka Daibutsu (Buddha) — the oldest Buddha statue in Japan. ¥350 admission. 12 min by car from Kashihara Jingu, or 25 min by Asuka-style rental bicycle.
If time permits — wander the rice fields, visit Ishibutai Tomb (a 7th-century burial mound), or stop at Asuka-no-Yu hot spring. Light walking, 4–5 km loop.
